PAWTUCKET -- A bright new era has begun for Tolman High’s fast-pitch softball program. The Tigers, who finished 3-13 in Division I last year, have advanced to contender status this season, thanks to an infusion of freshman players who honed their skills in the Darlington Girls League and on travel teams.
“We have a group of freshmen who play at a high competitive level,” Tolman coach Craig Giarrusso said on Friday after his Tigers improved to 3-1 with a 10-0 victory over Woonsocket. “Of the 14 players on our roster, 11 play travel ball. That’s a big help to me because these girls come in with some great skills and we just have to fit them into our system.”
Six Tolman players are freshmen, and five of them were in the starting lineup on Friday.
The revitalized Tigers made their presence known around the state on Wednesday with a 6-2 victory over two-time state champion Lincoln, ending the Lions’ 44-game winning streak.
