PAWTUCKET—About three and a half months after the shooting death of 21-year-old Ryan Almeida at Galego Court, a 20-year-old Providence man was apprehended in Maine and charged with his murder. Pawtucket Police also say that a 17-year-old male has been charged in the crime and one or more additional arrests may be imminent.
The suspect who had fled to Maine was identified as Daquan Watts, of 26 Hollis St., Providence. Due to recently developed information, Pawtucket Police detectives had learned of several suspects, one of whom was Watts. They obtained an arrest warrant for Watts and later learned he was in Maine. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Service and other local authorities, Watts was taken into custody on Tuesday in Lewiston.
On Wednesday, Watts waived extradition and was returned to Rhode Island to face criminal charges. He was arraigned in District Court in Providence Thursday morning on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy. He did not enter a plea, which is the usual practice at this type of arraignment. He was ordered held without bail at the ACI, pending an April 24 bail hearing.
Additionally, Pawtucket Police say that a 17-year-old male was taken into custody on April 4 for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of Almeida. He was also charged with first degree murder and conspiracy.
Maj. Arthur Martins said that investigators believe the shooting of Almeida was done in retaliation for a previous incident, although he declined to provide specific details.
