Jose Jesus de Abreu
PAWTUCKET- Jose Jesus de Abreu, 81, of Pawtucket passed away Tuesday, January 20th at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Francelina (dos Santos) De Abreu and father to Grace Small and Belinha De Abreu.
Born in Arega, Figueiro dos Vinhos, district of Leiria, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio Simoes and Jacinta Abreu, one of 11 children. Mr. De Abreu immigrated to the United States, and soon after married his wife in Silver Spring, Maryland on May 4, 1968 after which he settled in Pawtucket where he has since resided.
Mr. De Abreu was proud to have become on American citizen in 1978. He worked as a landscaper for Our Lady of Fatima Church in Cumberland, RI and later worked as a skilled welder with Mossberg Steel in Cumberland. On November 21, 1974 he was hit in a car accident which resulted in his early retirement.
Jose was a member of St. Anthony's Church, but also attended Holy Family Parish in Pawtucket. He was an associate member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana in Cumberland and was very active in the Portuguese community. He loved gardening, especially tending his fruit trees, rabbits and playing the accordion. Most of all Jose cherished time with his family and friends and was especially devoted to his daughters for whom he was a good father.
Mr. De Abreu is survived by his wife Francelina De Abreu, two daughters Gracieta S. Small and her husband William Small, Belinha S. De Abreu and her husband Jay Lindberg. One of 11 children he leaves relatives in Portugal, primarily his brother Antonio Simoes Juliao, Fernando and his wife Isaura and he leaves many other beloved relatives and friends in Portugal and the United States.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. The Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, 33 Lawn Ave. in Pawtucket and will be followed by a burial service at Mt. Calvary Cemetary on Curran Road, off Rt. 123 in Cumberland.
