CENTRAL FALLS — She was one of the city's own, who had pursued her education and then stayed to help and inspire others, so the news of the sudden passing of Ella Risk Elementary School Principal Maureen Azar cast a pall over the community.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the 51-year-old educator have not yet been made public. The news was announced within the school community by Victor Capellan, deputy superintendent for transformation. He had sent out an email on Tuesday at 7:41 a.m. stating, “A few hours ago, the Central Falls Learning Community suffered a great loss. Maureen Azar, principal of Ella Risk Elementary school in Central Falls passed away early this morning. This is a sad time for everyone.”
Capellan added that school personnel and grief counselors would be in place at the elementary school to support the children, teachers and families. Later that morning, he sent out a second statement that read, “The Central Falls School Department grieves the loss of a tireless educator and an advocate for the children and families of Central Falls.”
