PAWTUCKET— Unfortunately, 'tis the season for robberies of package deliveries.
On Tuesday, Pawtucket Police arrested a city man for committing such a crime —the second incident in five days.
According to Major Arthur Martins, on Tuesday at approximately 1:15 p.m., Pawtucket Police received a call from a resident who noticed a male removing a box from the porch of a house on Grand Avenue. The witness provided police with a description of the suspect and of the box he was carrying. Several officers arrived in the Grand Avenue area and a suspect was found on London Avenue.
The suspect was identified as Justin K. Silvestri, 24, of Kenyon Avenue, Pawtucket. Police officers also located a package which contained a delivery address of Grand Avenue. Silvestri was arrested and charged with larceny under $1,500, Martins said.
The Pawtucket Police Department said this is the second recent incident in which the active participation from a resident reporting suspicious activity resulted in an arrest. The first incident was very similar, Martins noted. In that case a witness also observed suspicious behavior where a suspect was taking packages from porches. This suspect was arrested on December 7.
Martins said the Pawtucket Police Department wants to reiterate that the public is a valuable partner in the prevention and solving of crimes. Residents are asked to call the police department at 726-3911 to report matters that appear out of the ordinary. Officers will respond and investigate each complaint and observation as quickly as possible, he said.
