PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Supreme Court has denied a request for a manual recount in a House race that had a one-vote margin after four machine counts.
The high court on Friday refused to order a hand count of the ballots in the District 58 Democratic primary between Rep. William San Bento and challenger Carlos Tobon.
The initial count after the Sept. 11 primary showed San Bento ahead of Tobon 543 to 540. The first recount showed them tied with 543 votes each. A second recount showed San Bento ahead 545 to 543. The final recount showed San Bento ahead 544 to 543. He was declared the winner.
The court said the law only requires a manual re-feeding of ballots and a manual recount of any ballots rejected by the machine.
