LINCOLN – Calling it Northern Rhode Island’s "premier" health and fitness center, the man described by associates as the driving force and creative genius behind MacColl YMCA’s new $13 million, 52,000-square-foot family fitness center said the state-of-the-art facility will be at the forefront of helping families and communities maintain healthy lifestyles.
"One of the questions that will be asked is, why build this?" Esselton T. "Ess" McNulty, general director at YMCA of Pawtucket, told a gathering of local and state officials Friday at a public open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the facility. "It is important to understand that there has been a sea change in our country. YMCAs used to be a place where we would take our children on a Saturday morning to learn how to swim, play basketball and take part in other activities. While that remains an important part of what the YMCA offers, parents today are worried about their framework for health, not only for their children, but the whole family."
