PAWTUCKET — A 23-year-old city man with a lengthy criminal record was arrested following the stabbing of a Cumberland man on Warwick Road early Wednesday morning.
According to Pawtucket Police Detective Capt. John Seebeck, police received a report that a stabbing had occurred in the vicinity of 28-30 Warwick Road at around 2 a.m. When police arrived, they found a male lying on the sidewalk with multiple knife wounds to his abdomen.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Anthony Santiago, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries, Seebeck said. His present condition is unknown.
Based on an investigation by detectives, a short time later, police arrested Marquis Lopez, of Warwick Road,
Pawtucket, as the suspect. Lopez was arraigned in District Court, Providence on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder.
Seebeck said that police had “probably cause” to arrest Lopez but declined to specify a motive.
According to Rhode Island court records, Lopez had been arrested numerous times on charges that included drug possession, motor vehicle theft, simple assault, disorderly conduct and other violations dating back to 2007. He had recently been released from prison, police said.
