Rev. Joseph P. Hynes
NORTH SMITHFIELD - Reverend Joseph P. Hynes, 85, pastor emeritus of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church in Pawtucket, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at Saint Antoine Residence, North Smithfield.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Lyons) Hynes. He attended St. Mary School, LaSalle Academy in Providence, also the School of Philip Neri in Boston.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Providence College and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1955 at the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul in Providence by Bishop Russell J. McVinney.
Father Hynes was assistant pastor at St. Philip Church in Greenville (1955-1969); Holy Names Church, Providence (1969-1972); administrator pro tempore at St. Joseph Church in Newport (1972-1973). In May 1973, he was appointed pastor of St. Teresa Church in Providence and in December 1980, he was transferred to St. Teresa Church in Pawtucket where he served until June 2000 when he retired as pastor emeritus.
In addition to his parochial duties, Father Hynes served also as a member of the Ecumenical Commission (1965); became a Diocesan Consultor (1966); was chaplain of St. Pius X Council Knights of Columbus (1957-1967); director of Priests Eucharistic League (1967-2000); dean of Providence Deanery #2 for two terms (1976-1979). Father Hynes was a World War II Navy Veteran. After his retirement, he lived in Coventry and assisted in various parishes. He later moved to Saint Antoine Residence in North Smithfield.
He is survived by a brother Rev. James P. Hynes, Pastor Emeritus, St. James Church, West Warwick of Providence and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephew and a great great grand nephew. He was the brother of the late Sr. Mary Hynes, S.H.S., John, Thomas and Edward Hynes.
Visiting hours will be held at St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket on Wednesday Oct. 12, 2011 from 4:00-7:00pm, followed by a parish Mass.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of his sole at St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, Pawtucket on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 at 10:00am. Interment will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Priest Retirement Fund, One Cathedral Square, Providence, RI 02903 in Fr.
