PROVIDENCE – Pressing against a self-imposed midnight deadline Thursday, the House Finance Committee worked to give its approval to an $8.7 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
About $3.4 billion of that will come from general revenues collected by the state and the rest from various federal sources. The $3.4 billion figure is about $10 million less than proposed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee in January, while the $8.7 figure is higher than the governor’s because of increases in federal funding, according to House Finance Chairman Raymond Gallison of Bristol.
