PAWTUCKET—With wet weather being forecast for Thursday, Pawtucket Proud Day will now be held on Friday, June 6, rain or shine. Organizers say that other details remain unchanged.
According to Christine Sullivan of The Pawtucket Foundation, emails were sent out to all volunteers who have registered notifying them of the change of date. She said that organizers apologize for any inconvenience this change may have caused, but after discussing the issue with city and project leaders, the decision was made to move the date to ensure the safety of volunteers and the likelihood of accomplishing this year's projects.
And an ambitious set of projects it is. This year's Pawtucket Proud Day work sites include Wilkinson Park, Slater Mill, the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, downtown and Armistice Boulevard tree wells, the Armory Arts district, Taft Street and Pleasant Street, School Street, Payne Park and Main Street.
On Friday from 7:30 to 8 a.m., registration will be held at the second floor of the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center (High Street entrance), 175 Main St., Pawtucket. Volunteers should check in with staff to sign an event waiver, receive a Pawtucket Proud Day T-shirt, and receive their work site assignment. Coffee and light snacks will be available.
From 8 to 8:30 a.m.,. there will be a welcome and safety briefing. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers will work at their assigned sites. Site team leaders will have specific instructions. From 12:30 to 2 p.m., there will be lunch (provided by Plouffe's Cup n' Saucer) for all participants.
Now in its 11th year, Pawtucket Proud Day was created by The Pawtucket Foundation to bring the city's business community together to help showcase public spaces, neighborhood parks, and “gateways” to the city. The annual event was conceived by Collette Vacations CEO and Pawtucket Foundation Co-Chairman Daniel J. Sullivan as a way of demonstrating the commitment of the local business community to the revitalization of Pawtucket.
