CUMBERLAND - Yvonne Smith, 68, of Dexter Street, passed away Tuesday, January 11, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Edward J. Smith.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Alcide and Estelle (Ouellette) Plante. She was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
Mrs. Smith was employed as an accounts payable clerk for Teknor Apex for many years, and was the owner of the former Smitty's Restaurant which was situated on Broad Street in Cumberland.
She loved camping, spending precious time with family at Wawaloom Camp Ground in Exeter, and also seasonal camping in Florida. She was an avid Red Sox fan. She was a founding member of the girls' softball league at the Boys and Girls Club in Cumberland for which she was inducted into their hall of fame in 2000.
Along with her husband, she leaves two sons, Edward Smith II and his wife Robin of Johnston and David Smith and his wife Tracy of Cumberland; two daughters, Deborah O'Brien and her husband David, and Suzanne Banspach of Cumberland; three sisters, Louise Savard of Cumberland, Gail Vargas of Coventry, and Donna Brown of New York; one brother Gerry Plante of Cumberland; six granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Jacob M. Smith.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 8 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM in the Historic St. Joseph Church, Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting Hours will be held Thursday, 4-8 PM.
