Woman slightly injured after crashing SUV into gas station

July 2, 2011

PAWTUCKET — A 62-year-old North Providence woman sustained minor injuries after she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed it into the side of the BP Gas Station at 577 Smithfield Ave. on Thursday afternoon.
According to Pawtucket Police, the driver, Diane B. Cain, said she was traveling east on Weeden Street and as she attempted to slow down to react to traffic, her foot slipped and accidentally hit the gas pedal, propelling the vehicle into the building. Her vehicle also struck a car belonging to a Providence woman that was parked in the gas station lot.
Cain’s blue 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe plunged through a plate glass window and struck part of the cinderblock wall of the gas station. Building Inspector John Hanley said that despite the substantial damage to the front and side glass windows, there was no structural damage to the building itself. He told owner Faiez Bazerji that he could secure part of the building and remain open for business.
Cain was transported to Memorial Hospital for complaints of neck and back pain, police said.
