E. PROVIDENCE - William J. McCoy, 92, of Waterfront Drive, East Providence and formerly of Pawtucket died on March 10, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Ruth (Barry) McCoy. They had been married 65 years.
Mr. McCoy owned and operated the McCoy Oil Company for over forty years. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. McCoy served in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. He served on the USS Wilhoite which was an destroyer escort, and his unit earned a Presidential Citation for bravery and sinking a German Vessel.
Mr. McCoy was a graduate of Pawtucket High School, a 1943 graduate of Brown University and a 1943 graduate of the Columbia University Midshipmen School. He was a member and Past President of the Pawtucket Rotary and earned its prestigious Paul Harris award. He was also a longtime member of the Wannamoisett Country Club, the Delaney Knights of Columbus, and the Hyannis Port Golf Club. Mr. McCoy was a longtime Trustee and member of the Boys and Girls Club of Pawtucket, a corporate member of the Memorial Hospital of Pawtucket and Butler Hospital.
Besides his wife of 65 years Mr. McCoy is survived by his children; Joseph P. McCoy and his wife Margaret of Houston Texas, Thomas P. McCoy and his wife Linda of Lincoln and Betsy McCoy of Medfield Ma. He also leaves his daughter in law Lynda McCoy and his seven grandchildren; Melanie M. McCoy, Sarah E. Higdon, Kathlene E. McCoy, Elizabeth A. McCoy, Carolyn M. McCoy, Jennifer L. McCoy and W. Barry McCoy. Mr. McCoy was the father of the late W. Barry McCoy and John F. McCoy. He was the brother of the late Nancy Arenburgh.
The funeral for Mr. McCoy will be FRIDAY at 10:00 am from the MANNING-HEFFERN FUNERAL HOME, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Teresa's Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket at 11:00 am. His burial will be with full Military Honors in Old St. Mary's Cemetery, Pine Street, Pawtucket. The calling hours for Mr. McCoy will be Thursday from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.
