PAWTUCKET - William F. Harty Jr, 80, of Naushon Road, Pawtucket died Friday, October 14, 2011.
He was the husband of Barbara (Wall) Harty. They were married 56 years.
Mr. Harty was born in Pawtucket the son of the late William F. Harty Sr and
Catherine A. (Shannon) Harty.
He was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket and Bryant College.
Mr. Harty was the President of Harty Realty and the HOD Corporation and Chairman of the Pawtucket Redevelopment Association. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.
Mr. Harty was a former Mayor of the City of Pawtucket, serving from 1981-1982. Prior to his tenure as Mayor Mr. Harty served as a Councilman at Large and President of the City Council in Pawtucket for over 13 years. He was the former Treasurer for the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket, a former board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Pawtucket, a member of the To Kalon Club, Past President and longtime member of Pawtucket Country Club, Past President of Pawtucket Rotary Club, a member of the the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army in Pawtucket, a Board member of the Children's Shelter, Pawtucket, and a member of the Economic Development Committee.
Besides his wife Mr. Harty is survived by his sons, Michael F. Harty and his wife Mary, Bill Harty and his wife Tracey and their children Katelin and Jessianne and his daughter Shannon and her children Andrew and Rachel. Mr Harty is also survived by his sisters Helen Keough and Joan Ballard. He leaves a wonderful group of nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Virginia Keough.
Bill was a left handed golfer, and loved to tell the story of lending his clubs to Ted Williams so that the Splendid Splinter could play a round of golf at Pawtucket Country Club.
The funeral for Mr. Harty will be Monday, October 17, at 9:00a.m. from the MANNING-HEFFERN FUNERAL HOME, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret's Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford at 10:00 a.m. His calling hours will be Sunday 2-6 p.m. in the funeral home.
