William D. Slattery, Jr.
PAWTUCKET - William D. Slattery, Jr., 80, of Pawtucket and Narragansett, died peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on Thursday, August 4, 2011. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late William D. Slattery, Sr. and Katherine A. (Toomey) Slattery. He was the beloved husband of Barbara A. (Rudolph) Slattery.
Mr. Slattery was a 1953 graduate of Providence College, was involved in Rhode Island's real estate profession for over 50 years with the W.D. Slattery Agency, and was known for his contributions to numerous professional, religious, and college causes. He was a longtime member of the College's President's Council and former President of the Real Estate Instant-List Association, and a former State Director and President of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers.
Mr. Slattery was a longtime supporter of the Catholic Charity Fund of the Diocese of Providence, serving as its general chairman in 1988. He also served as a member of the fund appeals executive committee and as the chair of the appeals special gifts committee for Blackstone Valley. He received the Monsignor Thomas J. McKitchen Memorial Award for Distinguished and Meritorious Service from the diocese for his dedication to the appeal. He also received the Papal Knight of St. Gregory from Pope John Paul II.
Mr. Slattery has had a close, longtime association with his alma mater. He began volunteering for the College's Annual Fund during the 1976-1977 year and was the first alumnus to serve as chairman of every level of the fund. As chair of the Annual Fund from 1985-1986, he led a drive that resulted in a record total of more than $4 million. He was the recipient of the Providence College Alumni Association's Faithful Friar Award in 1988 and the Mal Brown Award in 1993. In 2003, he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration. He also had been an active volunteer and served on the National Alumni Association as well as the College's Building and Grounds Committee. He and his wife Barbara established an endowed scholarship fund for students in need in 2007.
Bill was an avid Friar Basketball fan and enjoyed skiing. He was a very generous man to many schools and charities such as: Providence College, Jeanne Jugan Residence (Little Sisters of the Poor), Christian Brothers of Narragansett and Ocean Tides Programs, Salve Regina University, St. Raphael Academy, and the Diocese of Providence.
Besides his wife, he leaves his three nieces: Anne Carroll Decker, Ph.D., Christine R. Luchun, Cynthia D. Barlow, and their families. He was the brother of the late Anne M. Carroll.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Concelebrated on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:00 am in St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. Private burial will follow in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday, August 7th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Greenwood, Warwick (Exit 12A off I-95).
