WEB ONLY: Clippers hockey team nips Islanders
Cumberland coach Mark Andreozzi saw his team improve to 5-2 on Friday night after the Clippers defeated Middletown, 3-2, at Adelard Arena.
WOONSOCKET --- Cumberland received a pair of goals from John Wainwright and outshot Middletown by a near 2-to-1 ratio on Friday night, yet the Clippers found themselves defeating the Islanders by a narrow 3-2 score in their Division II crossover affair at Adelard Arena.
The Clippers, who are 5-2, outshot the Islanders (3-3) by a 49-25 count, but had their problems putting the puck past Middletown goalie Dennis Turano, who ended up with 46 saves.
Wainwright netted his first goal 3:44 into the game, and after the Islanders tied the contest with 1:52 to go in the first period, the Clippers answered back on Greg Wellingtonâ€™s goal with eight seconds left in the period and Wainwrightâ€™s other goal, a power-play score, 2:45 into the second period.
The Islanders cut their deficit in half with 3:39 to play in the game, but Cumberland goalie Leo Lake kept the visitors off the board the rest of the way and ended up with 23 saves.

SMITHFIELD --- The Lincoln/Cumberland co-op team did its best to give undefeated La Salle Academy a run for its money on Friday night at the Smithfield Municipal Rink, but the Rams, with the help of a four-goal outburst in the first 6Â½ minutes of the last period, were able to skate away with a 6-2 crossover victory.
The locals, who dipped to 3-4, were tied with the Rams (7-0) at 1-1 at the end of a period of play, thanks to Marissa Isabellaâ€™s unassisted goal with 5:02 left in the period. The Rams then took the lead with 1:19 left in the second period, before blowing the game open early in the third.
Cassidy DiPaola notched the localsâ€™ other goal, an unassisted tally, at the end of the final period, and Lincoln goalie Ashley Devolve stopped 34 shots.
