CRANSTON – Senior Malcum Moniz scored a pair of touchdowns and added a two-point conversion to lead Shea past undefeated Cranston East, 14-0, Friday evening at Cranston Stadium. The win was the Raiders’ first in Division II-B play against two defeats. “It’s a win we definitely needed,” said Shea head coach Dino Campopiano. “To hold Cranston East no zero points is impressive.” Moniz’ scores came from one- and five-yards away. Shea will look to extend the good vibes when it travels to Coventry next Friday.
Clippers edge S.K. SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Cumberland went down to Curtis Corner Middle School and came out with a hard-fought, double overtime triumph against defending Division II champion South Kingstown, 29-28, on Friday. Tied at 23 in the second OT, Cumberland’s Evan Patrick hauled in a 10-yard pass from quarterback Dan Canavan with Chad Bacon adding the extra point. South Kingstown found the end zone on its possession, then opted to go for the win. The deciding play featured strong pressure from Cumberland’s Michael Kruger and an interception in the end zone by Ricky McCoy. “Huge win for our kids,” said first-year Clippers coach Chris Skurka. “We really needed to bounce back after suffering a goal line stand (in last Friday’s 31-28 home loss to Coventry).” Cumberland led 14-6 heading into the fourth quarter before S.K. eventually evened the score and sent the contest into overtime. Both sides scored and made good on the conversion, the Clippers’ score coming on a five-yard run by David Elkas. Justin Gaudette scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for Cumberland as part of a 102-yard performance. Keith Gorman added 60 yards on 10 carries for the Clippers, who welcome Toll Gate to Tucker Field next Friday. *** Cumberland 7-0-7-0-8-7 – 29 South Kingstown 0-6-0-8-8-6 – 28 Cumberland scoring: Justin Gaudette 24 run, 51 run; David Elkas 5 run; Evan Patrick 10 pass from Dan Canavan. Cumberland Conversions: Joe Vecchio pass from Canavan, Chad Bacon three kicks.
