By ERIC BENEVIDES Sports writer PAWTUCKET --- The five turnovers certainly hurt. So did the 19 net yards of offense in the second half and the struggles in the trenches. And because of that, Shea High watched Toll Gate High battle back from a 12-0 deficit on Friday night and bus out of Max Read Field with a 19-12 Division II-B triumph that left the Raiders still in search of their first victory and head coach Dino Campopiano at a loss for words. “We’re not a very good football team right now,” said Campopiano. “I don’t know how many turnovers we had, but we hurt ourselves. Toll Gate played hard. They were down 12-0 and they came back to win. But we’re just not good right now, and we have a lot of work to do.” The Titans, who also came into the game looking for their first victory, knotted the score 90 seconds into the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitch Howkins to tight end Zach Furtado in the back of the end zone and copped the lead on an extra point kick by Alex Azeredo. After the Raiders went three-and-out on their next series, the Titans made it a touchdown game on a 53-yard scamper to the end zone by tailback Derick Durand that was aided by a few missed tackles. The Raiders, who fumbled the ball seven times in a 9-0 defeat to Lincoln High last week, coughed it up six times last night and lost three fumbles on their first three possessions of the game. But on their fourth series, they struck gold when Manny Baptista broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run 32 seconds into the second quarter that saw him streak through the middle almost untouched and bolt toward the right pilon of the end zone. That score marked the Shea starters’ first points of the season. With 4:30 to go in the half, the Raiders took advantage of another big play for their other TD, as a 58-yard pass play from quarterback Josh Burgo to Malcum Moniz helped set up a one-yard run up the middle by Moniz. But the Titans cut their deficit in half before the break and used a little trickery to get on the board, as tailback Anthony Wesley took a pitch from Howkins and rifled a 65-yard option pass to Norman Houle, who dodged an oncoming Raider defender as he reeled in the ball and headed for paydirt. The Raiders, who ran for 106 yards in the first half, only managed negative-three on the ground in the final 24 minutes, while the Titans, who began to wear the Raiders down up front, did their best to keep the clock and the chains moving by getting 113 of their 191 yards on the ground in the second half. Aside from playing well defensively in the second half and ending the contest with 336 yards on offense, the Titans had their share of flaws as well. They also had five turnovers – three on interceptions by Howkins and two on lost fumbles. Howkins was 0-for-8 passing with those three picks (two by Shea defensive back Orlan Thomas) before completing a 53-yard pass to Furtado late in the third quarter that helped set up his TD pass to Furtado that he lobbed over a pair of Shea defenders. The Raiders finished the night with 205 yards of offense. Burgo and backup quarterback Adilson DaSilva teamed up to complete just eight of their 23 passes for 105 yards and two interceptions by Burgo, and Baptista (77 yards on eight carries) couldn’t follow up his touchdown run with anything significant. ** TOLL GATE, 19-12 Toll Gate 0 6 0 13 -- 19 Shea 0 12 0 0 -- 12 S – Manny Baptista 75 run (kick failed) S – Malcum Moniz 1 run (run failed) TG – Norman Houle 65 pass from Anthony Wesley (kick failed) TG – Zach Furtado 5 pass from Mitchell Howkins (Alex Azeredo kick) TG – Derick Durand 53 run (kick failed)
