PawSox's Cabrera understands business aspects of game |

By BRENDAN McGAIR Sports writer PAWTUCKET – Fernando Cabrera was spotted playing catch in the outfield with Pawtucket Red Sox pitching coach Rich Sauveur Sunday evening. Could this be interpreted as Cabrera, an All-Star closer with the PawSox, is poised to rejoin the Red Sox organization, providing of course, he clears waivers? Like Cabrera, the baseball world will learn of his fate come Tuesday at 1 p.m. In the meantime, the right-hander needed a place to throw, which is what brought him to McCoy Stadium in the first place. “I just want to be ready,” said Cabrera in an exclusive interview with Blackstone Valley Sports. “I don’t want to lose (the good vibes) in just a couple of days. Plus I feel comfortable with the guys here.”
Sitting in the dugout after a 15-minute long toss session with Sauveur, Cabrera spoke about residing in baseball limbo at a point in the season in which minor leagues are rapidly approaching the finish line and big league clubs are formulating their rosters for the playoff push. He said he has been constant contact with his agent, though nothing has officially turned up as of late last night. “When you’re on waivers or (designated for assignment), it’s never a good time, whether it’s early in the season or late. You just hope good things happen,” said Cabrera. “If it’s not (with Boston), maybe with somewhere else.” Cabrera said he understand why he was DFA’ed in the first place, that occurring Friday prior to the Red Sox kicking off a weekend series against the Yankees. Cabrera was replaced on the 25-man roster with Michael Bowden, who on the same night of his summons gave up seven runs in two innings. “They had to make a roster movement; they have a tough series against the Yankees and they felt they needed a long guy out in the bullpen,” added Cabrera. “I need to recognize those things; I cannot just assume (being placed on) waivers is the best situation for me. I know what I’ve been doing all year.” Cabrera took over the closing duties for the PawSox in early May, when Daniel Bard was promoted. Cabrera went on to nail down 20 saves (in as many opportunities), posting a 1.69 ERA in 38 appearances prior to Boston purchasing his contract on Aug. 9. Cabrera said spending time in the Red Sox’ bullpen was a far cry from his two prior ports of call, those being the Indians and Orioles. He totaled four innings with Boston, compiling a 4.50 ERA with seven strikeouts. “It was special because (the time in the bigs) was with Boston. You can feel that everyone is together, whether it’s the pitchers or hitters, it’s special,” said Cabrera. “You see how the fans follow that team, (you enjoy that environment) because you don’t see that everywhere.” Cabrera has zero regrets if this is, indeed, the end of the line with Boston. “I enjoyed the time I was there. I did a good job in the big leagues, which is important.” Being a six-year minor-league free agent, Cabrera had a clause in his contract that permitted him to leave Pawtucket by June 1, if he desired. Cabrera elected to stay, believing deep down he would get a crack to pitch in Boston. Now the question begging for an answer is whether he will get another opportunity to do so. “I just have to keep working hard and hope I get another chance to enjoy the Boston process again,” said Cabrera. “You’re going to see a lot of things in this game that you don’t have any control over, situations will happen that you can’t worry about. I just have to worry about getting back to the level I was at.”

Saturday night I attended the semi-final girls basketball game vs Townies Girls team as an aunt of one of the EP players. It was an exciting all-around game for both teams, and I give credit to my niece and the Townie girls too for a great season. <br />I just have to say though, that I was particularly impressed with the talent, poise and unflappable playing style of this Tolman girls team! It can only speak well of a great coaching staff, and their love and encouragement of these talented girls. After the game, the low-key humilty that the Tolman girls displayed, showed real sportsmanship and class. I have a feeling that this season is the "Year of the Tiger" and hope that they go straight on to victory in the championship. No matter what the outcome though, they've gained a new loyal fan in me, and I look forward to following the next seasons with real interest. This is the way that high school sports should be played! You go Tolman girls! - Regina Orio
