Here’s what Pawtucket Jay Rainville had to say about his decision to retire from professional baseball when reached Friday night: “It’s something that’s been on my mind for a long time and I feel it’s the right move. I was never able to regain the form I once had before the [shoulder] surgery. I got my arm strength back, but unfortunately I never quite got the velocity back. It’s tough to pitch when you don’t have any velocity.” Asked if he left the door open for a possible comeback, Rainville responded, “I’ve worked for the last three years following the surgery. I’ve spoken with some of the best doctors out there, and there’s not much else that can be done. I don’t want to be that guy who gives it up, comes back and goes through the motions. This is the decision I’m sticking by. I gave it all for six years and I’m ready to start a new chapter in my life.”
