ALBANY, N.Y. --- Backs against the wall. The Lincoln Little League Major Division All-Star team suffered its worst defeat in tournament action on Tuesday afternoon by dropping a 10-0 decision to Milford, Conn. in their New England bracket game of the Eastern Regionals at American Field. Lincoln, which is 9-2 in tourney play and was coming off a 9-3 victory on Monday over the Jess Burkett Little League All-Star team of Worcester, Mass., only collected two hits in the game, which was cut short after four innings by the mercy rule, and added to its woes by committing five errors.
The loss puts Lincoln in a must-win contest today at 11 a.m. when the locals face South Portland, Maine, which owns a 10-3 victory over Milford and a 10-0 loss to Worcester. The winner of the Lincoln-South Portland game will play Milford on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the New England finals. In Monday’s victory over Worcester, Lincoln parlayed seven hits, seven walks, and some key bunts into its nine runs and received a splendid performance from pitcher Alyssa Schermerhorn, who tossed a three-hitter. Worcester took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Lincoln came back to tie the score and then rally for four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Lincoln only had two hits in the inning, one of them a two-run single by Schermerhorn, but capitalized on five walks. Worcester cut its deficit in half by scoring twice in the third, but Lincoln soon put the game out of reach by scoring three runs in the sixth with the help of two hits and two walks. Meredith Walsh also had a big RBI single in the game, and Rachel Albanese and Schermerhorn contributed some key bunts.
