PAWTUCKET – Michael Bowden continued his strong hurling for Pawtucket on Friday night, hurling six innings of two-run baseball during a 3-1 loss to the Columbus. Bowden only made two mistakes, home run balls to Matt LaPorta and Jordan Brown, two of the better hitters in the league. He didn’t get much support from the anemic PawSox offense, which managed just three hits in the game, two of those in the first inning.
LaPorta, who came to the Cleveland organization when the Indians traded C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee last year, hit his four-bagger off Bowden with two outs in the fourth inning to erase an early 1-0 Pawtucket lead. LaPorta, who is hitting .313 on the season, now has 13 homers and 48 RBI. Brown, a .329 hitter, belted his 11th homer leading off the seventh inning to break the tie. Pawtucket got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Travis Denker drew a walk off Columbus starter Chuck Lofgren. Chris Carter singled and Denker came home when newly-acquired Chris Duncan singled. Aaron Bates then grounded into a double play to let Lofgren off the hook. Lofgren then settled down and left with a 2-1 lead after six innings. The lefthander allowed only two hits while walking three and fanning two. Bowden, who threw five hitless innings against Syracuse on Sunday, went seven innings in this game, allowing four hits, walking none and fanning five batters. Columbus tacked on its final run in the top of the ninth when Brown singled and came around on Andy Marte’s double. Jensen Lewis threw two shutout innings of relief for Columbus before Greg Aquino pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the season. The four-game series resumes tonight with a 6:05 p.m. game. While losing 15 of their last 18 games, the PawSox have batted for a team average of .216. Their seasonal team batting average is currently .231 after dropping to a low of .228 on July 10. PawSox pitchers in their last 17 games are 3-14 with a 5.49 ERA (90 ER in 147.2 IP) as their team ERA has risen from 3.49 on July 2 to their current 3.84 (it was a season-high of 3.86 on Wednesday).
