Electrical smell leads to summer school evacuation E-mail
Tuesday, 21 July 2009

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland High School Transitional Building was evacuated Monday morning after workers detected an “electrical smell.”

Firefighters were called around 8:16 a.m. to the school building, which is located at 2602 Mendon Road.
“Maintenance (employees) alerted us and evacuated the building,” said Cumberland Hill Fire Chief Kenneth Finlay. “There was an odor, an electrical odor. It was an overheated motor in one of the water coolers.”
Firefighters found the overheated motor in about 15 minutes. The motor caused a “smoky odor,” but no damage to the building.
“There was no damage,” Finlay said. “It was confined to the unit.”
About 100 people, including students taking summer courses, were evacuated from the Mendon Road building. They were allowed to return to classes within a half hour.
Responding to the high school were members of the North Cumberland, Cumberland Hill, Valley Falls and Cumberland Fire Districts, as well as members of the Albion and Manville Fire Departments.
