PAWTUCKET — Police confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that a 20-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound at about 10:10 p.m., Monday, on Division Street, then walked a short distance to The Memorial Hospital emergency room to be treated.

The female then was transferred by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital for further treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
“It was definitely a gunshot wound to the back – actually, the right shoulder blade area,” stated Maj. Arthur Martins, a member of the department's detective unit. “She walked into the hospital on her own. Two units responded to the emergency room when nurses called police to notify us, as they are required to do by law. As far as I know, I don't think she's still being hospitalized right now.
“It occurred in the vicinity of the Cumberland Farms (convenience store) on Division Street,” he added. “That information is based on her report to police, and we're trying to verify that at this point. Does that mean she knows the person? We're not sure, but she's not cooperating with investigators.”
Police did not state what type of firearm may have been used in the shooting.
When asked if the woman knew her assailant, Martins offered, “Based upon her lack of cooperation, it's fair to say that she knows more than she is revealing. Does that mean she knows the person? I'm not saying that, but she's not cooperating with investigators.
“We're in the process now of hunting down any leads, so we're asking anyone with possible information to come forward and speak to police; we'll be happy to listen,” he added. Any witnesses, or those with information concerning a possible suspect, have been asked to call (401) 727-9100.
