PROVIDENCE — A Cumberland man, accused of robbing a bank earlier this week, was arrested Thursday after he tried to run down a state trooper with his vehicle, according to police.

Darrin A. Gray, 43, of 266 High St., was arrested Thursday in Olneyville near the Freeway Car Wash after leading police on a chase through the capital city.
The chase began earlier that evening at the Shell gas station, located at the intersection of Chalkstone and River Avenues.
State Police had received information that Gray was in the vicinity. Gray was wanted on an arrest warrant, issued by Cumberland police, for allegedly robbing the Soverign Bank on Broad Street Wednesday.
Undercover officers surrounded the Shell gas station around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. Gray was reportedly sitting in a parked Jeep at the time.
An unmarked police cruiser attempted to pull in front of Gray's vehicle, blocking his exit. Gray apparently noticed this manuever and attempted to drive around the cruiser.
A member of the Violent Fugitive Task Force, who wore a badge around his neck, apparenlty ran in front of Gray's vehicle and identified himself as a police officer, according to police.
Gray allegedly continued to drive the vehicle. The officer, identified as Sgt. Donald Devine, then fired two rounds from his weapon with neither shot hitting the suspect.
An official review of the incident will be conducted, according to reports.
Police then followed the SUV to Olneyville, where its operator stopped and jumped out near the Freeway Car Wash. Gray was arrested at this time.
Police later discovered crack cocaine inside the SUV, they said.
Gray was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, the vehicle; possession of cocaine; resisting arrest; possession of a knife over three inches; three counts, possession of a bludgeon; eluding police; and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license.
Cumberland police have also charged Gray with second-degree robbery and assault with intent to committee a felony, robbery.
Gray was transported to the Lincoln barracks for processing and held overnight. He was arraigned Friday in Sixth District Court, Providence.
He is being held without bail as a probation violator for a previous charge.  A pre-arraignment conference is scheduled for Sept. 4.
According to court records, Gray has an extensive criminal record dating back to 1988. He has been sentenced for numerous charges, including robbery, drug possession and assault, over the past 20 years.
He pleaded “nolo contendre” to the charge of receiving stolen goods under $500 this past February.
Gray was out on bail on that charge at the time of his arrest.
