By SANDY McGEE CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland Police Department officially welcomed a new member on Wednesday, as well as promoted a member to the rank of sergeant.
Douglas C. Ciullo, who was appointed as a police officer in July 1996, was officially sworn-in as sergeant at a ceremony held Wednesday evening at Town Hall. Shanna D. Loveless was also sworn-in on Wednesday evening as a new officer for the department. Mayor Daniel J. McKee officiated at the swearing-in ceremony. See CPD, Page A-2 Ciullo previously served on all three shifts of the Patrol Division until September 1999, when he was assigned to the Detective Division as the juvenile officer. While serving as juvenile officer from 1999 to January 2002, he wrote numerous grants for the Juvenile Hearing Board. He also investigated and prosecuted juvenile cases, as well as felonies committed against children. In May 2001, Ciullo completed the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) course at the Rhode Island State Crime Laboratory. From January 2002 until July 2005, he served as a detective, in which he investigated crimes and acted as the lead BCI officer and evidence custodian. Since January 2007, he has served as prosecution officer at the district and municipal courts. Ciullo has been a member of the color guard since 1997 and served as the officer-in-charge from 1997 until 2005. He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science, and Rhode Island College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in justice studies. Also, while attending Rhode Island College, he received the Mary Ann Hawkes Justice Studies Award. Ciullo graduated in December 2008 from Roger Williams University School of Law, receiving a juris doctorate. He has been admitted to both Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bars. He is an Army Reserve veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, in which he served with Task Force 134 and Detainee Operations in Baghdad from September 2005 to September 2006. He has attained the rank of major. Ciullo has been married to the former Lisa Cooper since 1991. They have one child. Loveless graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy on June 26. She is the daughter of William and Diane Loveless of Warwick. William Loveless is a retired third-generation Providence firefighter. Shanna D. Loveless is a 2001 graduate of Pilgrim High School in Warwick. She is also a 2005 graduate of Rhode Island College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology. After a retirement, Loveless will become the third female member of the Cumberland Police Department. Capt. Christine Crocker recently announced her retirement after 23 years.
