By JON BAKER CENTRAL FALLS —- Turns out, banging and kicking on doors at 4:15 a.m. can be hazardous to your freedom. Police arrested Greg A. Larotonda, 30, of 160 Broad St., Providence at 7:12 a.m., Friday on two felony counts of attempted breaking-and-entering and, more seriously, assault on persons over 60/causing bodily injury.
At 4:15 a.m., patrol units responded to the fifth floor at Forand Manor for a report of an intoxicated male knocking and kicking on doors. Officer Joseph DeCristoforo spoke with an 81-year-old man, who told him he awoke when he heard a commotion outside his door. When he went to open it, a white male wearing a white New England Patriots jersey had attempted to gain entry into his apartment. “(The victim) stated he had to use all his effort not to let the subject in his residence,” DeCristoforo wrote in his report. “When he was attempting to close the door on the subject, he jammed his right hand in the process.” Central Falls Rescue responded and transported the senior to The Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket for medical attention to his wrist, which later was diagnosed as a severe sprain to his right hand. DeCristoforo returned to the manor at 6 a.m., when dispatch had received a call about a male subject wearing the same jersey passed out on the seventh floor. He phoned CF Rescue, which transported Larotonda to The Memorial Hospital, and that’s when the officer told him he was under arrest for assault and battery as well as breaking-and-entering. “Greg had no idea of the incident that (had) just occurred, due to him being highly intoxicated,” DeCristoforo reported. “I attempted to ask (him) a few questions about the incident; he just stated, ‘I was in Pawtucket at the Comfort Inn with my girlfriend.’” The 81-year-old victim, still at the hospital, positively identified the suspect as the one who tried to gain access to his apartment. When hospital staff released him, Larotonda was transferred to headquarters for processing in the holding area. The Prosecution Division transported him to Sixth District Court for arraignment on the two charges later Friday morning. He was held on $25,000 surety bail, police said.
