By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — A 20-year-old Taunton man and his three-year-old niece were killed in a two-vehicle crash on I-95 on Saturday at around 5:35 p.m., said Massachusetts State Police and a spokesman from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
Matthew Kercado, and his niece, Jeniya Ebert, were both killed after the 1997 Ford Explorer they were riding in collided with a 1996 Chevrolet on the northbound side of the highway near Exit 2. According to police reports, the vehicle rolled over and they were ejected. Four others were injured and taken to local hospitals. Jeniya's mother, Jessica Ebert, 23, of Attleboro, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition, according to Gregg Miliote, of the Bristol County DA's Office. Ebert was the driver of the Ford Explorer, police said. Ebert's 14-month-old son, Jaivaughn Ebert, was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital; her mother, Heather Kercado, 42, of Taunton, and Heather Kercado's brother, Christopher Ebert, of Boston, were taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. Kercado remains hospitalized, Miliote said. The driver of the Chevrolet involved in the crash was identified as Jennifer Poissant, 18, of Pawtucket. She was not injured, police said. According to State Police, the incident is still under investigation by the Collision and Reconstruction Section and its Crime Scene Services Section. No charges have been filed against Poissant, Miliote said. According to published reports, the two victims were among six relatives in the SUV who were believed to have been heading home from visiting another family member at Rhode Island Hospital. In an unconfirmed report, a relative told a member of the news media that she had been told that a motorcycle had cut off a car two lanes over, which had prompted a chain reaction leading to the crash. The highway was closed for about 90 minutes following the crash, and traffic was backed up on Route 1, police said.
