WOONSOCKET — A Pawtucket man was arrested Friday for allegedly choking, beating and robbing a Woonsocket man that offered him a place to stay.
John L. Cioe III of 135 Pullen Ave., Pawtucket, was arrested Friday and charged with first degree robbery. The victim, 32-year-old Keith Badeau of South Main St., is listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital, according to published reports. According to police, Cioe called Badeau on Friday around 3 a.m. asking the Woonsocket man for a place to stay. The Pawtucket man told the victim that he was stranded in the city. While at the South Main Street residence, the victim turned his back to put on a movie. Cioe allegedly came up from behind the victim and began to choke him with a belt, according to police. The two struggled until the victim was overpowered by the assailant and lost consciousness. The suspect then allegedly beat the unconscious victim and took off with various items from the home, including cash, jewelry, a jacket, socks and rare coins. The victim, after regaining consciousness, was able to call police and provide a description of the suspect. Badeau was transported to Landmark Medical Center and later to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Woonsocket Police Officers Justin Glode and James Cote located the suspect a short time later on South Main Street, not far from the victim’s house. The suspect had blood on his hands and shoes, according to police. Police also said they found the suspect in possession of various stolen items from the South Main Street residence. Cioe was held overnight at the police station and later taken to District Court. He was held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) pending a bail hearing in two weeks.
