CENTRAL FALLS --- For a team hoping to claim the fourth and final berth in the Division III playoffs, Central Falls High couldn’t have picked a better time to have its offense come alive.
The Warriors, who have averaged a dozen runs in their last five games, put on a hitting clinic on Monday afternoon in its game with neighboring rival Shea High at Macomber Stadium. C.F. collected 13 hits and took advantage of six Shea errors in a 14-2 triumph that was halted after 4½ innings by the mercy rule.
Sophomore pitcher Solyris Vega tossed a three-hitter on the mound and led the way at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a solo home run for the Warriors, who have won three of their last four games to improve to 6-4.
The fifth-place Warriors will next play unbeaten Tolman High on Thursday afternoon at Slater Park, but on Friday, they will battle fourth-place Central High (6-3) back at Macomber.
The Knights defeated the Warriors by a 10-0 score back on April 7 on a day when not much went right for C.F., but coach Nick Pagliaro hopes his team can return the favor and step up its play in their rematch.
“We had an off day,” Pagliaro noted about that earlier game. “We didn’t hit the ball or play good defense, but we’ve been playing very well lately. If we can hang in there, I think we’ll do all right.”
Against the Raiders, the first eight batters in the Warriors’ lineup collected at least one hit, and in addition to Vega’s solid day at the top of the lineup, Kayla Camara and Melanie Velez each added two hits and three runs scored and two RBIs and Alba Vargas had two hits and three RBIs.
“We’ve been hitting the ball well,” said Pagliaro. “We’ve done a very good job against teams with pitchers who don’t throw that fast.”
The Raiders, who dipped to 2-9, endured a tough afternoon at the plate and in the field. Not only did they only have two batted balls reach the outfield, but they also committed four of their six errors in the opening inning to help the Warriors take a 4-0 lead.
A groundout by Halie Webb and a single up the middle by Vargas drove in C.F.’s first two innings, and two errors, followed by a passed ball, resulted in the other two scores.
In the second, Vega and Velez got things going for the Warriors by smacking back-to-back home runs into the gap in left-center field, and with two gone, Sasha Gonzalez drove in two runs with a single to left.
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the third when singles by Genesis Parilla and Abigale Rodriguez and the Warriors’ only two miscues of the day added up to Shea’s two runs.
But the Warriors came back with five runs in their half of the inning on two-run singles to left by Holly Webb and Camara and a run-scoring triple down the left-field line by Vargas.
Valerie Biascochea drove in C.F.’s final run in the fourth with a groundout.
The Raiders are back in action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. game at Max Read Field against Central.
