P-Bruins edge Worcester in series opener |

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Bruins opened their best-of-three Atlantic Division championship series on Tuesday night by defeating the Worcester Sharks, 3-2, in an overtime thriller at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The P-Bruins, who got their goals from Martin St. Pierre, Brad Marchand and Jeremy Reich, will be back to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Friday, May 8, at 7:05 p.m. for Game 3 of the Atlantic Division finals. The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 1:06 mark of the opening period. Marchand stole the puck halfway up the boards and skated into the right face off circle. He passed the puck to St. Pierre, who was wide open back door to score his second goal of the postseason. The P-Bruins grabbed a 2-0 advantage at the 5:55 mark of the second period, while on the power play. Mikko Lehtonen had the puck in the high slot and sent it halfway up the boards for St. Pierre. He found Marchand on the opposite side of the net, who tallied his third goal of the playoffs. But Worcester pulled within a goal at the 12:55 mark, while on the power play. Jamie McGinn netted his first goal of the postseason, with Dan DaSilva and Jason Demers recorded the assists. The Sharks tied the game at two at the 14:39 mark of the third period. McGinn tallied his second goal of the game, while Demers and Ryan Vesce picked up the assists. But in overtime, the P-Bruins took the victory with a goal at the 6:19 mark unassisted from Reich. Tuukka Rask stopped 35 of 37 shots for the P-Bruins, while Thomas Greiss made 24 saves for the Sharks. The P-Bruins were 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins return to action on Wednesday, May 6 at the DCU Center in Worcester at 7:05 p.m. for Game 2 of the series before returning to The Dunk for Game 3 on May 8.
