By DAVID HENAULT Anglers are fishing the Barrington and Warren Rivers with limited success using green crabs and tautog . They are catching undersized tautog behind the Samsonite building and on the bridges. Some people are using clambellies in attempts to catch some early season schoolies. Anglers fishing at Bristol Narrows are not faring much better. With the warming temperatures, larger tautog should start moving in. Menhaden are moving into Narragansett Bay with small schools being reported in Apponaug and Greenwich Coves. Bill " The Eelman" Nolan reported no fish on his trips in Greenwich Bay but is seeing plenty of bay anchovies and silversides a sure sign that the bass will be here soon. There was a large school of Menhaden at Conimicut Point on Saturday and anglers snagging them reported no success livelining them and marked no bass in the area. The bass migrate in with the menhaden as they make their way up from the Chesapeake so the Providence River should heat up within the next few weeks. Rhode Island offers world class striper fishing in May and June as the waters north of Conimicut Light are teaming with menhaden. Charter Captains Billy Silvia, Neal Vitullo and Mike McCoy all fish this area and have 25-40 fish days there with the average fish weighing between 15-25 pounds. Flyfishermen ply the waters in the shoals at Conimicut Light with much success using Clousers and Deceivers with 7 and 8wt WF lines. Bait fishing is productive, using chunks, whole dead or yo- yoing pogies as well as liveling them. Francesco DiGiovanni reports that the Seekonk River has both herring and pogeys and the bite has been off a bit. This often happens when there is more bait than predators. Bob Oberg caught 31 stripers up to 26 inches long while trolling tube and worm rigs from his kayak on the Thames River in Preston, Ct. The Thames River is a popular spot for many R.I. anglers in the winter and spring as there is a large population of winter over stripers from New London up to Preston. *** Winter flounder season is open until May 24. Fishing is limited to the waters south of Ferry Road in Saunderstown. Narrow River and the salt ponds are some of the more popular spots. They are caught with seaworms or squid, minimum size is 16" and 4 fish per angler is the limit. On the freshwater scene, Jake Coburn caught numerous largemouth bass between 2 1/2 and 3 pounds at a small pond in Western R.I. Ian Toracinta caught largemouth bass weighing up to 1 1/2 pounds at Wincheck Pond in Rockville, R.I. The trout bite is still a little slow but they are taking trout worms, mealworms and nightcrawlers as well as powerbait and small roostertails. Smallmouth bass action is heating up at Quabbin Reservoir in Wareham, Ma. With rising water temperatures the largemouth bass should start getting more active as they prepare to spawn. The Captain John Fleets party boats out of Plymouth, Ma. are still finding haddock plentiful at Stellwagen. *** David Henault operates Ocean State Tackle at 1284 Hope St Bristol , Branch Ave Providence and at The Centre of New England in West Greenwich / Coventry .
