PAWTUCKET — A 21-year-old city man was arraigned in District Court Tuesday morning on reckless driving charges after he struck and injured a 17-year-old girl from his neighborhood early Monday evening.

Viriato Candido, of 79 Abbott St., 2nd, was charged with driving to endanger, a felony. Following his arraignment, bail was set at $25,000 and he is currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institution, according to a District Court clerk.
According to Pawtucket Police Major Arthur Martins, Candido is believed to have been driving at a high rate of speed down Abbott Street, a short distance from his house, when he lost control of his vehicle and began to fishtail. His car, a Ford Crown Victoria, struck a parked car and then plowed into the 17-year-old girl who had been standing near 92 Abbott Street. The accident occurred at around 5:50 p.m.
The victim, identified in accident reports as Elga Gibau of Larch Street, was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital with a head injury. She was conscious after the accident and her injuries were serious but not considered to be life-threatening, Martins said.
He added that Larch Street is just around the corner from where the incident occurred.
Martins said it appeared that Candido was just driving too fast down the residential street, which has a speed limit of 25 mph and lost control of his car. He remained at the scene of the accident after the girl was struck, he added.
