Times hockey tourney begins Wednesday E-mail
Tuesday, 25 December 2007
PAWTUCKET --- Tolman High will look to four-peat as champions of the fourth annual Times’ Santa Fund Holiday Tournament this week at Lynch Arena, but it won't be easy.
That's because the Tigers will open their title defense today at 1:45 p.m. against a newcomer to the tournament, Bishop Feehan High, which promises to be a strong threat to knock the Tigers' reign.
The Shamrocks are considered one of the top teams in southeastern Massachusetts, averaging 11 victories and qualifying for the Division 3 state playoffs in each of the last seven seasons. They also boast a veteran team with three of the top veteran players in their chunk of the state -- junior goalie Tyler Holske, senior defenseman Devan Cornetta, and senior forward Jordan Davidner.
Holske concluded last season with a superb .928 save percentage, and in the Shamrocks' season opener last week against King Philip High, he turned away 27 shots in a 3-2 victory. Cornetta is a four-year starter for the Green & Gold, and Davidner took his junior year off to play junior hockey for the Walpole Stars' 'B' team.
The Tigers, meanwhile, also have their share of standouts that have helped them amass a 2-3 mark in the Division 2 ranks. Senior goaltender Ari Vieira is back between the pipes for his fourth season, junior defenseman Peter Gray is one of the best in the division at his position, and senior right wing Bryan Tavares and senior left wing T.J. Jackvony lead the team in scoring.
The winner of this game will take on the survivor of today's battle at noon between East Providence High and Mount Hope High. The Townies, who lost to the Tigers in last winter's finals, have just one win in their four games and produced only seven goals, and the Huskies are 2-0-1 in the Division 3-Central ranks.
The championship game will take place tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. back at Lynch, while the consolation game is slated for noon.
