PROVIDENCE — Don’t know how to get hold of your state representative or senator? Or get in touch with your Town Council or School Committee member?

Want a list of the lobbyists at the Statehouse and the companies and organizations they work for?
Secretary of State Ralph Mollis has a book for you. And it’s free.
The “Rhode Island Government Owner’s Manual” will answer those questions and more about public officials at the federal, state and local levels, and even some of the staffers who can help cut through red tape.
Sixty-four hundred copies of the 304-page directory are available for distribution. You can get one by going to Room 38 at the Statehouse and asking for a copy. The new directory is also posted on the Secretary of State’s Web site at www.sec.state.ri.us, where it will be constantly updated until the next book is published in 2011.
Printed every two years to reflect the results of November elections, the book has historically been popular with the public. Every copy of the 2007 edition was handed out within months of its release.
The manual is traditionally used as a resource by good government groups, community organizations, businesses, the media and lobbyists who need to interact with government.
“This directory makes it easier for the public to connect with elected officials, seek help and find out more about the practice of making policy,” Mollis explained. “I am committed to making government more open and accessible. Our Statehouse and our town halls belong to the people. This directory recognizes the central role they play in our democracy and works as a bridge to the help government offers.”
“The Web is an economical option,” Mollis said. “The information is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world, easy to revise and inexpensive to provide. Improving the availability of government information and assistance online continues to be my priority.”
According to a press release, the new Owner’s Manual includes contact information for every member of the General Assembly and the state’s general officers, each of the state departments and agencies, as well as city and town councils and school committees and members of the state’s Congressional delegation. The directory even lists key staff for state agencies and municipal departments.
There is also information about each of the state’s courts – Supreme, Superior, District, Family, Workers Compensation and the Traffic Tribunal.
You can also read the U.S. Constitution, the Rhode Island Constitution and even the royal charter of 1663 that established the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
