PAWTUCKET – In what has to be considered the biggest win for the Shea basketball program in quite some time, the Raiders knocked Classical from the unbeaten ranks Friday night, rolling to a 73-59 triumph at ‘The Cage.’ The loss is Classical’s first in two seasons. Or to put in better perspective, Tolman was the last team to get the Purple (15-1), which occurred in the ’07 D-II quarterfinals. Right now the Raiders (14-2 D II-North) are looking at a No. 3 seed should playoffs begin today. “Big win, the kids played really solid” said an enthusiastic Greg Barker, Shea’s head coach. “They keep getting better all the time.” Malcum Moniz paced the Raiders with a game-high 21 points, pulling down six rebounds. Rudy Brito delivered a season-high 20 points while Austin Silva pulled down eight boards. “Rudy played great both halves, taking good shots,” said Baker. Classical’s Ashton Watkins’ the state’s reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half. Barker credits the defensive pressure applied by O.J. Whitaker, Bralio Silva and Johnny Muavero for keeping Watkins in check. “They worked Watkins all night.” Classical, the last team to hand Shea a loss (86-81 on Jan. 21), jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Raiders quickly caught up and never looked back. Now on a nine-game winning streak, Shea closes out the regular season with games against Toll Gate (Tuesday) and Scituate (Friday). *** CLASSICAL (59): Tewen Osgood 2 0-3 4, Lavon Waite 5 2-2 14, Jordan Jones 4 0-0 8, Michael Palumbo 5 0-0 12, Tim Keefe 1 0-0 2, Ashton Watkins 7 5-9 19.
