WOONSOCKET --- After getting burned by goals off rebounds for most of the night, Mount St. Charles Academy gave Bishop Hendricken High a taste of its own medicine.
MSC captain Kyle Beauchamp flipped in the rebound of a shot from Trevor Plante with 5:52 left in the game, snapping a 4-4 tie and lifting the Mounties to a thrilling 6-4 victory over the Hawks in their marquee battle of Division I unbeatens at Adelard Arena.
This meeting, which was only the first of three regular-season showdowns between the two rivals, took place in a playoff-type atmosphere, with both teams battling and checking each other as if it was mid-March and the state title was on the line at Providence College‘s Schneider Arena.
The arena quickly reached its capacity of 800 at the start of the contest, and several fans were turned away at the door.
“It was fantastic hockey,” said MSC coach Dave Belisle, whose crew is 7-0 in the division and 10-2 overall. “We played extremely well and we were up for the challenge. We played a very good opponent and it was a great Rhode Island high school hockey game against two bitter rivals.”
Trevor Plante scored the tying goal of this roller-coaster affair with 7:16 left in the game, and he later iced it with 13 seconds on the clock with an empty-netter that was set up by Beauchamp’s third assist of the night.
The Hawks, who are 8-1 in the division and 11-1-1 overall, were sparked by Nick Mattiello’s best game of the season, as he netted a hat trick and scored twice in the first 7:21 of the third period to give the visitors a shortlived 4-3 lead.
Mattiello scored his third goal by tucking in the rebound of a shot past MSC goaltender Jason SanAntonio, and it was the third time in the game that the Hawks scored off a rebound.
“You have to give them credit,” said Belisle, whose crew outshot the Hawks by a 33-18 count, 15-5 in the final period. “They crashed (the net) for their rebounds and they worked for them. We’ve been working on trying to clear the rebounds, but they beat us to the puck.”
The Hawks actually drew first blood just 1:29 into play when Matt Metcalf flipped in a rebound past SanAntonio for his 15th goal of the season, but the hosts answered back.
At 6:39, freshman Brian Campbell tied the score for the hosts by redirecting a shot by Zach Samborsky, and 45 seconds later, John Lace put MSC ahead with his first goal of the year by rifling a slap shot from the point that Hawk goalie Shane Benjamin had no chance at fielding with his glove.
But again, the Hawks struck, and 1:09 into the middle period, capitalized on another rebound in front of the Mounties’ goal, as Mattiello stuffed the puck past SanAntonio in the middle of a wild scramble on the doorstep.
With three minutes to play in the period, the Hawks had a golden chance to reclaim the lead, as Matt Salhany scooped up a loose puck near the blue line and tried to score on a partial breakaway, but SanAntonio stood his ground and swatted away the shot.
The action quickly returned to the Hawks’ end of the rink, and with 1:55 to play, Evan Hoffman (who went into battle with a banged-up wrist) gave the hosts back their lead with his 11th goal of the year by scoring on a wristshot from a tough angle from the side of the goal that snuck past Benjamin and under the crossbar.
Mattiello answered back with his next two scores in the third period to give the Hawks the lead with 7:39 to play, but the Mounties came back in a very big way.
“I was proud of the way we came back,” said Belisle. “When they took the lead, the momentum changed, but 30 seconds later, we banged it in and that was the turning point of the game right there.”

Novans edge PCD

WOONSOCKET --- Woonsocket High needed this win.
Sophomore Zach Viggiani scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season in the final 4:29 of the game on Friday night to push the Villa Novans to a 2-1 win over Providence Country Day at Adelard Arena.
The victory was just what the doctor ordered for the Novans, who came into the game with four straight losses. Woonsocket had opened the season with five wins in a row before their recent swoon.
The Villa Novans outshot the Knights by a 32-18 count, but were frustrated by the strong netminding of Pat Rock, who ended up with 30 saves.
This game was scoreless for two periods until the Knights broke the ice on Rumford’s Kyle Long’s 13th goal of the season with 5:50 to go in the game.
But Viggiani tied the score with 4:29 on the clock by scoring on a pass from Corey Badeau, and with 2:09 to go, he produced the game-winning goal by capitalizing on Drew Jallette’s first assist of the season.
