By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Thursday night stabbing of a 53-year-old city man that reportedly occurred in the hallway of his Lorraine Street apartment house.
According to Detectives Major Arthur Martins, the victim, Manuel Sousa, told police that he was out drinking earlier in the evening with friends and had returned to his apartment. He said that a short time later, just before midnight, he answered his door and was involved in an altercation with several individuals. He suffered three stab wounds. Martins said that Sousa knocked on the door of another tenant’s apartment and asked the neighbor to call police. Sousa, who police said was heavily intoxicated when they arrived, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. His wounds were not considered to be life-threatening, Martins added. Sousa, who shares an apartment with several roommates, told police he did not know who his attackers were and provided few other details about the incident. Martins also said that none of the other tenants of the three-story apartment house reported seeing or hearing anything unusual at the time of the reported attack. Due to Sousa’s condition, he said police would be conducting additional interviews with him about the incident.
