By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — A 23-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near the Lonsdale Avenue overpass on Tuesday night at around 11:30 p.m.
Pawtucket Police identified the victim as Brent M. Arnold, whose last known address was in Attleboro. Police say the death appears to have been a suicide, although the incident is still under investigation. Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesman, said it was northwest train No. 178, bound from Washington to Boston that was involved in the accident. He confirmed that a male trespasser had been struck and killed at the Pawtucket site, about three miles south of the South Attleboro train station. Cole said there were about 40 passengers on the train at the time, but there were no injuries to either passengers or crew. The train was delayed on the tracks for about two hours while authorities investigated the incident. The train was released at around 1:20 a.m. to continue its route, he said. An unidentified bystander reported seeing words that looked like “bye bye” that had been scrawled into the snow near where the incident occurred. Police confirmed that there were some words written in the snow, but said they could not make them out and are unsure if they are related to the incident. During the investigation, police arrested a local man, who they said appeared to be intoxicated, for acting disorderly near the scene on Mineral Spring Avenue. William R. Haney, of 42 Bullock St., Pawtucket, was charged with one count of disorderly conduct, police said. This is the second such tragic incident involving a pedestrian being killed by a train in a week. On Jan. 4, a woman identified as 37-year-old Clio Chafee of Providence was struck by an Amtrak train headed to Boston while standing on the tracks at the train station. A family member said that her death was a suicide.
