By JON BAKER LINCOLN — Because of a simple car accident, local police helped the U.S. Marshals Service snare a 21-year-old Cranston woman on a felony child neglect charge.
At 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, police arrested Jamie R. Chartier for a warrant of arrest on affidavit, and the woman was on Wednesday being held at the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls. Just before 5 p.m., Patrolman Walter Ptaszek arrived at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Route 146 southbound, near the Wilbur Road overpass, and spoke with the operators involved. Due to heavy traffic conditions, Ptaszek asked those drivers — none of whom were injured — to move off the thoroughfare and onto Old Louisquisset Pike to gather information for his accident report. A female passenger in one vehicle became reluctant to offer her personal information, stating she had no identification, but soon revealed her name. “A computer check of Chartier came back showing a (National Crime Information Center) hit with a warrant for child neglect from the U.S. Marshals Service headquarters,” located in Providence, Ptaszek wrote in his report. “Dispatch confirmed the warrant, and I was advised they would extradite.” After fellow Patrolmen Ryan Laboissonniere and Brian Molis arrived as backup, Ptaszek arrested the suspect and took her to headquarters for processing. The officer then contacted two deputies, who made arrangements for Chartier to be held at the detention center. That transfer occurred without incident. Lincoln Police Lt. Raymond Bousquet, the department’s public information officer, indicated the arrest to be unusual. “It’s much more common to deal with Rhode Island and/or local warrants as opposed to those occurring nationally, and those requested from United States Marshals,” he said.
