Zolt sworn in prior to special meeting E-mail

PAWTUCKET — They’ve all made it legal: School Committeewoman Amy Breault Zolt, who had missed Monday night’s inauguration due to a prior commitment, was sworn-in by Mayor James Doyle at City Hall on Wednesday morning.

Breault Zolt had scheduled her private swearing-in for Friday at 10 a.m., but moved it up so she could vote in the 7 a.m. special meeting that has also been scheduled for Friday where the School Committee will reorganize.
Otherwise, Breault Zolt would have been ineligible to cast a ballot for the committee’s chairman, deputy chairman and clerk.
Newly elected School Committeeman Joseph Knight has called for the special meeting to be held at 7 a.m., a departure from the past practice of holding the reorganization prior to the first School Committee meeting of the new year, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13. Knight said he did not think the school board should go an entire week without establishing a chain of command.

However, Breault Zolt had questioned Knight’s motives, likening it to “backdoor politics.” Based on erroneous information from another school board member, it was previously reported that the reorganization vote takes place in executive session. Rather, it is done in public session, and Breault Zolt maintained that the 7 a.m. meeting time will serve to keep away some members of the public who might otherwise want to attend.
School board member Nicole Nordquist had also voiced disapproval of the early morning meeting, saying it goes against the School Committee’s policy.
Nordquist had not signed the resolution that Knight had asked for on Monday night. However, five other school board members agreed with the special meeting request, which was enough for a quorum to proceed.
