By VINAYA SAKSENA ATTLEBORO — The woman killed in a Saturday afternoon train accident has been identified as a 37-year-old Providence resident.
Clio Chaffee was standing on the track at the South Attleboro commuter rail station when she was hit by a train, an MBTA spokesman said Tuesday. According to Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole, Amtrak Train 165, which runs between Boston and Washington D.C., hit "a trespasser" at around 3:30 Saturday. No one else was reported injured, Cole said. The train was delayed just over two hours, and the accident scene was cleared at around 7 p.m. Cole noted that the 165 does not stop at the South Attleboro station. He said roughly 200 people were on the train when Chaffee was hit. The accident underscores the need for passers-by to steer clear of the rails, Cole said.. “Anytime something like this happens, it’s certainly tragic,” he said. “And when it does, it certainly reinforces our message:" keep off the tracks. Such accidents are traumatic for train operators, Cole added. He said the operator in Saturday’s accident had not suffered injuries, but declined to comment on that person's mental or emotional state. The accident remains under investigation by MBTA police.
