CF girls net hoop victory over Davies E-mail

LINCOLN --- In his nine seasons as Central Falls High’s coach, Joe Handy has never had a team with a combination of height, speed and depth like the one he’s coaching this year.
Those three characteristics were on display on Thursday night in the Warriors’ 49-23 win over host Davies Tech in the Division III opener for both teams – a victory that saw three CF players rip down at least 13 rebounds, the Warriors total 21 steals, and Handy give all 11 of his players at least 10 minutes of time on the floor. Freshman forward Anairis Rodriguez, who produced just 11 points in the Warriors’ first three games of the season, had a breakout game for the winners by tossing in a game-high 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Junior center Sakira Wilson also added a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds and senior forward Valarie Biascochea and junior guard Halie Webb had strong games as well, but Handy, whose crew improved to 3-1 with the win, refused to single out anyone, but chose to praise his team in his post-game remarks.
“I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far,” offered Handy. “They’re catching on. They know the system now. I’m just trying to sell them on the fact that there are 11 girls that can play every night and we have to keep the whole team concept in mind. They’ve been good with it so far and it’s been paying off. Win or lose, we’re going to go 11 deep.”
Handy went 11 deep in the first half of Thursday’s contest, which saw the Warriors break open a tight game with an 11-point run that gave them a 17-3 command with 7:40 on the clock.
That lead eventually grew to 28-9 at the break, and in the first four minutes of the second half, CF’s starting five of Rodriguez, Wilson, Biascochea, Webb, and speedy freshman guard Anjelique Cooley rattled off 11 straight points to boost the Warriors’ command to 30.
Biascochea and Webb each finished the contest with eight points. Biascochea also ripped down 13 rebounds and had three steals, and Webb, who had a solid all-around game with eight boards and five assists, was one of three CF players with four steals, joining senior Jenny Gonzalez and Cooley in the theft club.
The Patriots, who had a tough night in the turnover department (41 to the Warriors’ 23), received an excellent game from senior guard Jasmine Santos, who scored 11 points and added four steals, but no one else netted more than four points.
The Warriors don’t play again until the day after Christmas, when they host Our Lady of Fatima High in a 2:30 p.m. affair. OLOF is just one of the squads Handy believes will be in the running for the Division III championship this year.
“I don’t want to not include everyone, but I would think it’d be the same bunch that was there last year,” said Handy. “Hope’s going to have a little something and Fatima’s going to be tough because I know they have a lot of returning starters from last year. And I’ll be honest with you, I think (Davies coach) Gerry (Suggs) has a lot of potential on his squad.
“But other than that, I don’t really know. I’m not one to scout. But I think it’s going to be very interesting.”

Saturday night I attended the semi-final girls basketball
game vs Townies Girls team as an aunt of one of the EP players. It was an exciting
all-around game for both teams, and I give credit to my niece and the Townie girls
too for a great season.  <br />I just have to say though, that I was
particularly impressed with the talent, poise and unflappable playing style of this
Tolman girls team! It can only speak well of a great coaching staff, and their love
and encouragement of these talented girls. After the game, the low-key humilty that
the Tolman girls displayed, showed real sportsmanship and class. I have a feeling
that this season is the "Year of the Tiger" and hope that they go straight on to
victory in the championship. No matter what the outcome though, they've gained a new
loyal fan in me, and I look forward to following the next seasons with real
interest. This is the way that high school sports should be played! You go Tolman
girls! - Regina Orio
