PAWTUCKET – More than a period worth of penalties didn’t stop St. Raphael Academy from disposing Coventry High Friday night. Matt Tougas netted a hat trick as the Saints cruised past the Knotty Oakers, 4-1, at Lynch Arena. SRA overcame nine penalties (12:30) to earn the Division III win. Holding a 1-0 edge after the first period, the Saints gave themselves some breathing room in the middle period with two quick tallies by Tougas. The senior right wing scored at 1:22 of the period and then, just 21 seconds later, found the back of the net again to give his team a commanding 3-0 advantage. Mount blanks La Salle WOONSOCKET – It was business as usual for the defending state titlist. Kyle Beauchamp scored twice and teammate Evan Hoffman had a goal and an assist as Mount St. Charles Academy blasted La Salle Academy, 5-0, at Adelard Arena. Mount, which ended a four-year drought by winning its 27th championship since 1978, out-shot the Rams by a substantial 37-19 margin. James Golden and Tim Doyle also found the net for the Mounties. Mount will have a week off before it faces its next opponent. The Woonsocket High sophomore netted a hat trick and also had a pair of assists as the Villa Novans easily defeated Johnston, 7-1, in a Division III contest at Adelard Arena. Sean Mowry, also a sophomore, added two goals and a trio of assists in the rout. Woonsocket took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a power-play goal by sophomore Jon Gray. The Villa Novans scored three apiece in the next two periods. The Panthers, who mustered just one win last year, avoided the shutout when Andrew Clement scored with two minutes remaining in the final period. Woonsocket goalies Josh Sloan and Kodi Sale combined for 17 saves. Northmen win opener SMITHFIELD --- North Smithfield High scored four straight goals during an eight-minute stretch midway through the second period en route to a 6-4 victory over North Providence High on Friday night in the Division III season opener for both teams at the Smithfield Ice Rink. Nick Naradowy had an unassisted goal and four assists for the Northmen, who also received an unassisted goal and an assist from Pat Shea and scores from Chris Caouette, Connor Naradowy, P.J. Brissette, and Bill Nangle.
