NEWPORT – From Super Bowl champs to a tie for last place. Such is the fall St. Raphael Academy took this season. SRA concluded the year with a seven-game losing streak against Division I opponents after bowing to Rogers High, 29-19, on Wednesday night at Toppa Field. Both the Saints and Vikings took the field with identical 1-6 marks. Both sides hoped to avoid joining Cranston West in the basement, but SRA can take some comfort since the Saints own the tiebreaker over the Falcons. The season finale was a microcosm of St. Raphael’s season: good enough to hang around, but not enough to finish the job. SRA scored first to build a 7-0 lead and took a 19-14 cushion into the final quarter before Rogers scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 12 minutes. SRA’s first score came when sophomore quarterback Trevor Vasey hit senior Marques Mosby from four yards out. Vasey finished with three scores and two interceptions on 16-of-35 passing, good for 184 yards. The Vikings rebounded to take an 18-7 lead before the Saints mounted a comeback. Sophomore Julian Fernandes and senior Evan Haworth were on the receiving end on scoring passes from Vasey. The fourth quarter belonged to the Vikings. Quarterback Kyle DeCosta called his own number to put his club up for good. Nico Erausquin added some insurance with a 23-yard run. *** SRA 7 6 6 0 – 19 Rogers 8 7 0 14 – 29 SRA scoring: Marques Mosby 4 pass from Trevor Vasey, Julian Fernandes 4 pass from Vasey, Evan Howarth 14 pass from Vasey. SRA conversions: Newon Sendolo kick.
