By SANDY McGEE CUMBERLAND — The State Police are currently investigating a complaint brought forth against a second-term member of the Cumberland Town Council.
Town Councilor Antonio J. Albuquerque of 46 Howe St., who was re-elected to his second term in November, is currently under investigation by state authorities. The complainant first spoke with police in Cumberland. “Cumberland police came to us last weekend after the victim filed a complaint with them. The complaint was against Mr. Albuquerque,” said Lt. Col. Steven G. O'Donnell, deputy superintendent and chief of field operations for the State Police. “We are investigating the complaint in conjunction with the Cumberland Police Department. The matter is under investigation and we can't comment further.” Police will not confirm the particulars of the complaint. Cumberland police also said they could not speak about the investigation, while referring all questions to the State Police. Albuquerque said on Monday that he was unaware of any investigation, but confirmed that he had been questioned by police. “As far as I know, there is nothing going on,” he said. “I don't know what the investigation is about. I guess they will tell me when the time comes.” Albuquerque, the owner and operator of the Third Base Sports Bar on High Street, serves as the District 1 representative on the Town Council. He also serves as the town's public safety liaison. Albuquerque is a former member of the town's Planning Board and former president of the Lusitania Club. He has served as a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland-Lincoln and as a volunteer for the Northern Rhode Island Community Mental Health Center. He has lived in town for more than 40 years.
