By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — A 53-year-old Cumberland man was arrested yesterday and charged with the Nov. 3 robbery of the Sovereign Bank at 215 Main St. in Pawtucket. Police say he also admitted to an earlier robbery of a Citizens Bank branch inside a Stop & Shop on Mendon Road in Cumberland that occurred on June 3.
Robert Major, of 2510 Mendon Road, was apprehended by Pawtucket Police Detectives Donti Rosciti and David Connors at around 11 a.m., police said. He was charged with robbery--second degree for the incident at Sovereign Bank that occurred on Nov. 3. According to Detectives Lt. Daniel Mullen, Rosciti discovered that the suspect, Major, had been admitted to a Rhode Island medical facility since the date of the Pawtucket robbery. An arrest warrant was obtained and detectives were able to apprehend Major shortly after his discharge. He was arrested without incident, Mullen said. Mullen declined to say which facility Major had been in or the nature of his medical problem. According to police, after further questioning, Major also admitted his involvement in the Cumberland bank robbery, and Cumberland Police detectives plan to charge him with robbery as well.
