By SANDY McGEE CUMBERLAND — Five contested seats on the Cumberland School Committee will be chosen by voters in various districts this Election Day.
Polls will open throughout town on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. For information about voter registration, the ballot or polling locations, visit the town Web site at www.cumberlandri.org/ or the Secretary of State’s Web site at www.state.ri.us/. The following School Committee candidates are seeking election. At-large, two seats: Campaigning for two available at-large seats are incumbent Robert C. Thibodeau, incumbent Lisa A. Beaulieu, Paul DiModica and Ryan William Pearson. Thibodeau, who is running for his eighth term on the board, is an employee of Cohen Heating Supply in Providence and a graduate of Tolman High School and the University of Massachusetts. A resident of Cumberland for 36 years, Thibodeau is a former member of the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland and Lincoln. He is also a former treasurer for the Cumberland Business Association and co-founder of the Cumberland Youth Baseball League. Fellow incumbent Beaulieu, who is seeking her second term on the seven-member board, has resided in town for 16 years. She is self-employed as a consultant for local technology firms and a graduate of Tolman High School and Northeastern University. During her tenure on the School Committee, Beaulieu has served as chair of the Curriculum Subcommittee, a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and CHS 2010 rededication committee. DiModica, a town resident for 21 years, is publisher and co-owner of the Bulletin Newspaper Group in Boston and owner of the Mayflower Publishing Co. in Cranston. A member of the Lodge of Elks, DiModica has served locally as a member of the CHS 2010 Building Committee. He is a graduate of the English High School in Boston and has attended courses at Northeastern University. Pearson, a lifelong town resident, is a graduate of Cumberland High School and the American University. He is currently attending Providence College. A staff assistant for U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, Pearson is the great-grandson of former state Sen. G. Frank Hanaway and nephew of former Sens. Paul Hanaway and Sandra Hanaway. District 2, one seat: Incumbent W. David Wagner is running for re-election against newcomer Daniel L. Pedro for the District 2 seat. Wagner has served on the School Committee since 2006. He is an employee of Inskip Infiniti. The father of five children, Wagner has served as a coach and past commissioner for Cumberland Youth Baseball. Pedro has not submitted any candidate information. District 3, one seat: Incumbent Donald J. Costa is running for re-election against newcomer John V. Gibbons for the District 3 seat. Costa, a 14-year veteran member of the School Committee, is a graduate of Cumberland High School and has completed courses at Roger Williams College. He is an employee of Vegas Fastener Mfg. and a former employee of Standard Nut and Bolt. He has served as a member of the Democratic Town Committee. Gibbons, a former member of the Cumberland School Committee and former member of the Board of Selectmen in Blackstone, is employed as director of national accounts for the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is a graduate of Mount St. Charles Academy and the University of New Haven, Conn. He is a former member of the Woonsocket Rotary, chair of the Cumberland Space Utilization Task Force, former member of the Cumberland Building Committee and youth baseball coach for several years. He served on the Cumberland School Committee from 1996 to 1998. District 4, one seat: Brian J. Kelly and Richard S. Hilton Jr. are campaigning against each other for the single District 4 seat on the School Committee. Karen MacBeth, who is not running for re-election to the School Committee, previously held the seat. Kelly, a former member and chair of the Pawtucket School Committee, is a graduate of Tolman High School, Bryant University and Providence College. He is employed as director of accounts payable for Bright Horizon Family Solutions in Watertown, Mass. Kelly served on the Pawtucket School Committee from 1994 to 1997. He is also a member of the executive board for the Rhode Island Business Educators Association, advisory board for the business technology program at William M. Davies Jr. Career and Technical High School and as a member of the Cumberland Space Utilization Task Force. Hilton, a town resident for 30 years, is employed as assistant director of residential life for Brown University. He is a graduate of Cumberland High School, the Community College of Rhode Island and Providence College. Unopposed candidates: Voters will also be asked to elect two unopposed candidates: incumbent Earl T. Wood of 48 Farm Drive, who is running for re-election to the District 5 seat, and former School Committee member Rosa Quinonez Crowley of 15 Liberty St., who is running unopposed for the District 1 seat. Wood has served on the School Committee from 1998 to 2000 and again from 2002 to 2008. Rosa Quinonez Crowley, who served on the School Committee from 2004 to 2006, is employed as a Spanish teacher at Woonsocket High School. She is a graduate of the University of Guayaquil in Ecuador and Rhode Island College. She has completed courses at Providence College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Spanish at the University of Rhode Island. Rosa Crowley’s husband, Frederic C. Crowley, who is not running for re-election, previously held the District 1 seat.
