South Kingstown blanks Shea E-mail

PAWTUCKET --- If Shea High was going to make a late, spirited run in the final two weeks of the season to grab a playoff berth, the Raiders were going to have to start by knocking off the top team in the Division II-B ranks.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, unbeaten South Kingstown High was as good as advertised, especially defensively, in their contest on Saturday night before a sparse gathering at Max Read Field.
Standout tailback Tim Hazard scored three touchdowns and the Rebels’ ‘D’ forced four turnovers and allowed the Raiders to cross SK’s 40 only once en route to a 24-0 victory that raised the visitors’ record to 6-0.
The Raiders, meanwhile, fell to 2-4 in division play and were ousted from the playoff race for the first time in four years, and while the Rebels’ ‘D’ played a role in the Raiders’ setback, so did Shea’s many mistakes, which ranged from their high number of penalties (10) to dropped passes (seven).

“We definitely hurt ourselves with our mistakes,” admitted Shea coach Dino Campopiano. “You can’t make mistakes when you play a good team like that, and you definitely can’t win making mistakes.”
On a positive note, the Raiders did a respectable job on defense. Not only did they limit their visitors to a season-low 169 yards of offense, they also forced the Rebels to turn the ball over on downs inside the Shea 10 on their first two possessions.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, because of those two stops inside their 10, they had to deal with poor field position on the ensuing two possessions and were unable to get anything going.
They were forced to punt from their five on their second possession, and that kick only went for 26 yards to their 31. Six plays later, the Rebels produced the only points they would need on an eight-yard run up the middle by Hazard with 4:53 to play in the first half.
The hosts tried to answer back on their next series, and they nearly did, with a 10-play, 67-yard drive that brought the ball to the Rebels’ five with 1:18 on the clock. But after an incomplete pass by Albert Amado and a two-yard run by Malcum Moniz, Amado was sacked for a 13-yard loss.
Then on fourth-and-goal with 13 seconds on the clock, Amado fired a pass in the middle of the field to Conrad Wise. He caught in at the 2, and as he was getting tackled by a Rebel defender, he tried to stretch over the goal line with the ball, but he was ruled down at the 1.
“I thought we played well in the first half,” said Campopiano. “Our defense played well and we moved the ball, but we didn’t have much field position.”
The Raiders had one more long drive to start the second half that took more than six minutes off the clock, but three penalties totaling 20 yards stalled the drive and they got the ball as far as the SK 43 before having to punt.
The Rebels then doubled their lead with 2:34 to play in the third quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by Hazard. After they upped their lead to 18-0 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ben Hamill to Ty Stromley on the first play of the fourth quarter, Hazard capped the scoring with a 14-yard run with 8:35 on the clock.
Hazard, who suffered a sprained left ankle on that final TD run, concluded his night with 81 yards on 18 carries. He now has 13 touchdowns and 916 yards on the ground this year and at least one TD in his last seven games.
“They’re a good football team,” noted Campopiano. “They play well together and they don’t make many mistakes. You can see why they’re undefeated and they’re going to do some damage in the playoffs.
The Raiders produced 191 yards of offense, with 108 coming through the air by Amado, who returned to the lineup after getting benched in last weekend’s loss to Cumberland High.
